LCA and EPD for Indian Manufacturers: Why Buyers Are Asking, and How to Get One

If you manufacture cement, steel, glass, chemicals, textiles or building products in India, you have probably seen a new line appear in customer tenders: "Please provide an EPD." An Environmental Product Declaration is fast becoming the passport for selling into green building projects and export markets. Here is what it is, why demand is rising, and how the process actually works.

What is a life cycle assessment (LCA)?

An LCA quantifies the environmental impact of a product across its full life — raw material extraction, manufacturing, transport, use and disposal — following the ISO 14040/14044 standards. The output includes the product's carbon footprint along with impacts like water use and resource depletion. It is the analytical engine behind every credible green product claim.

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration is the standardised, third-party-verified report of that LCA, published under ISO 14025 (and EN 15804 for construction products). Because EPDs follow common product category rules, a buyer can compare your product's footprint directly against a competitor's — which is exactly why procurement teams love them.

Why demand is rising for Indian manufacturers

  • Green building certifications — IGBC, GRIHA and LEED projects award credits for products with EPDs, so specifiers shortlist suppliers who have them.

  • Export requirements — European buyers increasingly require EPDs in tenders, and the embedded-emissions data overlaps heavily with what CBAM demands.

  • Corporate Scope 3 programmes — your customers need your product footprint to report their own supply chain emissions, and EPD data is the format they trust.

The process, step by step

  • Define goal and scope: which product, which functional unit, which life cycle stages (cradle-to-gate is the common starting point).

  • Collect inventory data: energy, raw materials, transport, waste and water for the production line, usually one full year.

  • Model impacts in LCA software against the relevant product category rules.

  • Independent verification, then publication with an EPD programme operator — after which the declaration is typically valid for five years.

Csquare delivers LCA studies and EPD support as part of our ESG services for Indian manufacturers. If a buyer has asked you for an EPD and you are not sure where to begin, get in touch — a cradle-to-gate study on one product line is a manageable first step.
