Why the monsoon window matters
This week is Van Mahotsav — India’s festival of forests, observed in the first week of July precisely because it coincides with the onset of the southwest monsoon. The timing is not ceremonial. Saplings planted after the first few solid spells of rain establish roots in naturally moist soil, suffer less transplant shock, and enter the post-monsoon months with enough root depth to survive their first winter and the summer after it.
The survival data makes the case bluntly. Professionally managed plantation programmes in India achieve roughly 70–85% sapling survival. Community-led drives manage 50–65%. Large ceremonial drives with no aftercare average 30–45% — meaning more than half the trees photographed on planting day are dead within a few years.
The mistake most corporate drives make
Most corporate plantation drives are planned backwards: a date is fixed for visibility, saplings are procured at the last minute, and the site is chosen for convenience rather than soil. Employees plant, photos are taken, and nobody owns what happens next. Three failure modes repeat every year:
Planting too early. Saplings placed in dry June soil before stable rains need immediate irrigation that most sites do not have. Field practice is to plant only after three or four good rainfall spells.
Wrong species. Ornamental or non-native trees may look good at the event but fail without constant maintenance. Native species matched to local soil and rainfall are what survive unattended.
No maintenance budget. Survival is decided in the 24–36 months after planting — weeding, mulching, protection, gap-filling. A drive that budgets only for planting day is landscaping, not afforestation.
What a serious monsoon plantation looks like
A credible corporate plantation is a 90-day project followed by a multi-year commitment, not a one-day event:
July — site and species. Soil testing, water assessment, and selection of native species suited to the region — well-designed projects use 30 to 100+ species to build real biodiversity.
August — planting after stable rains. Planting begins once monsoon moisture is consistent, giving each sapling weeks of natural watering while roots take hold.
September–October — establishment. Mulching, weeding, replacement of failed saplings, and geotagged photographic baselines so survival can actually be audited later.
After establishment, a defined two-to-three-year maintenance contract with periodic survival-rate reporting separates genuine afforestation partners from event vendors.
