The new rules apply to specific businesses, referred to as "obligated entities," in the following sectors:

โžก๏ธ ๐‘ฌ๐’Ž๐’Š๐’”๐’”๐’Š๐’๐’ ๐‘ป๐’‚๐’“๐’ˆ๐’†๐’•๐’”: Specific greenhouse gas emission intensity targets are now set for each "obligated entity". These are detailed in sector-specific schedules for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 compliance years.



โžก๏ธ ๐‘ช๐’‚๐’“๐’ƒ๐’๐’ ๐‘ช๐’“๐’†๐’…๐’Š๐’• ๐‘ช๐’†๐’“๐’•๐’Š๐’‡๐’Š๐’„๐’‚๐’•๐’†๐’”:ย Entities that outperform their emission targets will be issued Carbon Credit Certificates. These certificates can be traded, creating a market-based mechanism for emissions reduction.



โžก๏ธ ๐‘ช๐’๐’Ž๐’‘๐’๐’Š๐’‚๐’๐’„๐’† & ๐‘ท๐’†๐’๐’‚๐’๐’•๐’Š๐’†๐’”: Businesses are required to meet their annual emission targets, covering any shortfall by surrendering banked or purchased carbon credit certificates. Failure to comply will trigger an "๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ฃ๐‘–๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘š๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘™ ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›" order from the Central Pollution Control Board, with a penalty set at twice the average trading price of a carbon credit certificate for that compliance year.



โžก๏ธ ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’๐’…๐’‚๐’•๐’๐’“๐’š ๐‘น๐’†๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’”๐’•๐’“๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’:ย All affected entities must register on the portal under the Indian Carbon Market Framework.

1. ๐‘ต๐’†๐’˜ ๐‘น๐’†๐’—๐’†๐’๐’–๐’† ๐’‡๐’๐’“ ๐‘ฎ๐’“๐’†๐’†๐’ ๐‘ณ๐’†๐’‚๐’…๐’†๐’“๐’”: Exceed your GHG targets and you'll earn tradable Carbon Credit Certificates. This allows you to directly monetize your sustainability investments.


2. ๐‘ช๐’๐’Ž๐’‘๐’๐’Š๐’‚๐’๐’„๐’† ๐’Š๐’” ๐‘ต๐’๐’-๐‘ต๐’†๐’ˆ๐’๐’•๐’Š๐’‚๐’ƒ๐’๐’†: Fall short and you must purchase credits to cover the deficit. Registration on the Indian Carbon Market portal is mandatory, with the first compliance year starting in 2025-26.


3. ๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’†๐’‘ ๐‘ท๐’†๐’๐’‚๐’๐’•๐’Š๐’†๐’” ๐’‡๐’๐’“ ๐‘ฐ๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’: Non-compliance will result in an "environmental compensation" penalty from the Central Pollution Control Board, equal to twice the average market price of a carbon credit for that year.
